Public Art Strategy, UTS Indigenous Residential College and Art Centre, Harris St Sydney

Aug 2021

UTS commissioned a public art strategy for the redevelopment of two sites in Harris St Ultimo, designated to be the first Indigenous Residential College and in Australia. The IRC -with an accompanying Indigenous Arts Centre -has been designed by First Nation’s architect Kevin Obrien of BVN, with landscaping by Aspect. UTS has committed a substantial sum to the realization of an artwork recommended to be a major feature in the Central Heart precinct – to be utilized for gathering, learning, cultural exchange, reconciliation and ritual. A truly exciting project adding to the UTS art collection and its reputation for architectural excellence. Hopefully the completed artwork will form a memorable addition to the City of Sydney’s Eora Journey. With Jonathan Jones, Professor Michael McDaniel and Prof Larissa Berhrent at the helm of the IRC Arts Centre Working Group, their focus is to be on the commissioning, collection and celebration of First Nations Art from SE Australia.
